Stories & Crafts: Home 1

Listen to a story told by one of the outreach storytellers, Dawn Buttery, hear a song, work on a coloring page and build a house!

Build a House

  • Paper lunch sack or a sack slightly bigger
  • Scissors
  • markers or crayons
  • glue stick or tape
  • Construction paper scraps for making windows, doors etc.
  • Scrap paper to loosely stuff the sack

  • Open the sack and help the child stuff scrap paper inside. Your help will prevent the sack from tearing.
  • Fold over the top of the sack and staple or tape it to form a roof.
  • Color a roof from construction paper and attach it to the top.
  • Let your child embellish the outside of the house with paper and markers.

You are your child’s first teacher and you know them the best. You can play these games at home to build memory and counting skills.

  • On a piece of paper draw a door and a window. Write the word door or window by each picture.  Walk with your child through your home to count doors and then windows.
  • Gather 4 tools from a toolbox and talk with your child about the name and purpose of each tool. Lay the tools out and cover them with a towel.  Secretly, pick a tool up with the towel and ask your child, “What is missing?” Continue the game as long as your child has an interest.
