Altered Books 2013!

Wizard of Oz

Wizard of Oz altered book by Rene Armbruster

Alice C. Sabatini Gallery staff members Brea Black and Zan Popp teach Altered Book Workshops every fall. Participants are given a book that has outlived its useful life and been discarded. They are then given the challenge of making that book into a work of art.

This year our students learned:

  •       To paint tissue paper that is strong enough to use for collage.
  •       To create two different pop-up structures.
  •        To sew in a book and add embellishments.
  •       To tell a new story by obscuring some words and leaving others.

These altered books are the work of creative and talented members of our community. They will be on display in the library from October 7 – November 18, 2013. You can also view these books and books from previous years on the library’s Flickr page:

Want to participate next year? Stop by the Gallery or call us at 785-580-4515 and let us know.

Brea Black is the Art Librarian and Book Arts Curator in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery. Her favorite thing is to share the wonderful world of artists' books with the community. She also leads the Arts & Crafts team and teaches workshops on bookmaking, altered books, and a variety of crafty topics.
