Laptop Checkout

Laptop checkoutLaptops are available for adults to check out for in-library use at the main library. Our two kiosks hold 12 full-featured laptops and offer a flexible option for going online anywhere inside the library. These laptops are available for in-library use for up to 5 hours.

Use your library card at a Laptop Loan Kiosk in the Movies and Music Room or the Kids Library and follow the steps on the screen. Once the laptop is checked out it will pop out of the kiosk. Laptops are then returned to the kiosk and cardholders are sent email verification the device has been returned. If you do not return a laptop you will be changed a $1,275 laptop replacement fee.

Laptops give you more flexibility of where you use computers to fully take advantage of all the great spaces within the library. If you are interested in quiet focused work, you can take a laptop into the North Reading Room, which is the only no talking area of the library. You can relax by the fireplace in the Topeka Room or get a cup of coffee and surf the internet in the Millennium Café. Parents can even work on a laptop while they watch their children in the Kids Library.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Who can borrow a laptop?
Adults (18+) with a library card in good standing can borrow a laptop.

How can I borrow a laptop?
Follow the on-screen instructions. These instructions include reading and accepting the Loaner Laptop Terms of Use.

How long can I borrow a laptop?
The time limit is 5 hours.

Do I have to sign a laptop use form?
No written signature is required but you must read and accept the Loaner Laptop Terms of Use electronically each time you borrow a laptop.

Do you restrict where I can take the kiosk device?
Laptops cannot leave the building. You may take them to any location inside the library.

Is there a receipt for borrowing?
Yes. A receipt will be emailed to the email address attached to your library account.

What do I do if the laptop is not functioning properly when I first borrow it?
Return the laptop as soon as you realize there is a problem with it. Please choose the displayed option that most closely describes the problem you had with the laptop. Then check out another laptop if available.

Is there a late fee and how much is it?
No late fees, but full replacement charges ($1,275) apply if not returned.

What happens if I lose or damage the laptop?
You are responsible for the loss or damage up to the total cost of the laptop ($1,275) per the Loaner Laptop Terms of Use you accepted when borrowing a laptop.

Why can’t I borrow a laptop someone else just returned?
The kiosk performs functions such as deleting the previous patron’s data and recharging the battery. This takes a minimum of 6 minutes (possibly longer depending upon how long the previous user had the device out and how much the battery was depleted) and during that time the kiosk device cannot be borrowed.

Why are some of the laptops not able to be borrowed?
A laptop cannot be borrowed while it is in charging mode or if one was reported damaged. Charging laptops will show up as yellow on the kiosk screen. Damaged devices will show up as red with a wrench icon. Damaged devices will be repaired and replaced as soon as possible.

How do I connect to the wireless network?
The laptops will automatically login. Once logged in, the laptop will automatically connect to the public wireless network.

How do I print from a laptop?
Use SmartAlec to upload your documents, then release/print at any Print Release Station at the library. To login, enter your Library Card number and PIN.

When I return the laptop, what happens to any data I have left on it?
Laptops are wiped clean of data to protect patron privacy after each use.

What if I get an electronic virus?
All equipment provided is guaranteed to be 100% virus free when delivered to you. If you get a virus while using the laptop, simply reboot the unit and that will eliminate the virus. Be careful to save anything that you've created on the machine as that will also be erased.

Can I store data on the laptop hard drive temporarily?
Yes, however, we recommend you use an external storage device and save your work frequently. If the laptop is rebooted or runs out of power anytime during the borrowing period, all locally saved data will be lost.
