At the library, our materials and services are available to all walk-in patrons. Outside the library, we deliver to congregate living sites and individuals in their homes on a regularly-scheduled basis.

Services

Your library improves the lives of hundreds of older adults in Shawnee County with home deliveries. By bringing them their favorite books, movies and music, our librarians provide older adults with plenty to do at their senior facility or home. The service also keeps a lifelong relationship with the library intact for folks who simply can’t get to the library anymore.

Staff are personal librarians and know their customers by name and reading preferences. They also provide excellent book, movie and music recommendations.

Where We Deliver
We deliver daily on a rotating two week schedule to places where residents are unable to come physically into the library, including:

  • Independent and assisted facilities
  • Medical and nursing home facilities
  • Senior meal sites
  • Senior centers
  • Senior apartment complexes
  • Private residences where residents are homebound

Librarians prep for delivery by selecting books, movies, music, games and activities for customers, based on demand and personal requests. Customers can call 785-580-4400 anytime during library hours to make delivery requests. Shelves are set up in common areas of residential communities for ease of browsing. It’s truly a scenario of a “pop-up library” for senior citizens, who can choose materials, talk with librarians about reading preferences and make reference requests. The time at residential facilities varies, ranging from 15 minutes to two hours.

Delivery with Heart
Librarians enjoy their work with the senior community of Topeka and Shawnee County because of the relationships. Every time we come out, people say how happy they are to see us, and how thankful they are for the service.

Activities & Materials

Large Print Materials

We have a wonderful collection of large print materials. It consists of non-fiction titles, a variety of fiction genres, paperback romances, newspapers, and magazines. All of these materials are housed in the Red Carpet Services area located adjacent to the customer service desk and the checkout lobby.

Low Vision

Are you or someone in your family living with low vision? If so, magnifiers and other assistive devices may help you or your loved one perform everyday activities that can be hindered by low vision. Finding the right device for an individual’s specific needs, however, can be difficult. That’s why the library offers a variety of magnifiers and devices to use on site or checkout.

Talking Books

A service of the Kansas State Library—provides personalized library support and materials in a specialized format to eligible Kansas residents to ensure that all may read. Learn more about Kansas Talking Books.
