Summer fun & learning continues

girl making a silly faceSummer – adults look forward to it as much as kids do. It’s a time to relax. Take a vacation. Catch up on reading. Summertime is the perfect time to visit the library. It’s a fun, welcoming place and a respite from the heat. There are summer programs for all ages.

Summer reading programs have been around since the 1890s to encourage kids (and teens & adults) to read during their summer vacation. Research shows that the greatest value of summer library programs is getting kids to spend time in a literacy-rich environment where they have access to printed materials and receive encouragement to build positive reading experiences. That sounds like the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. Truly, Summer Reading & Events can motivate and support literacy for the whole family.

Favorite activities & events

Programs today are anything but old school! They include activities, prizes and special events. The library’s website is full of events to keep you in the know, but I’ve comprised a list of my favorites for the whole family.

  1. Enroll in the summer reading program. While the Reading Challenge ends July 31, you still have plenty of time to track reading you've done since June 1. Use the app or use a paper tracker you can print or pick up at the Kids Library desk. The summer reading program incentivizes reading and all reading counts. Think picture books, ebooks, read-a-longs, chapter books, audiobooks and graphic novels.
  2. Attend the Sabatini Gallery’s summer exhibit Unexpected Friends. It is family friendly with fun activities and way cool art.
  3. Check out the Blockbuster Wednesday shows. We have a different performer every Wednesday in June and July with shows at 10am, 1pm and 6:30pm.

Purchase fresh produce and yummy treats at the Monday Farmers Market. It’s happening every Monday (except Labor Day) through Oct 2, 7:30-11:30am in the library’s parking lot.

  5. Join in the fun with Preschool Stories and More. We provide interactive stories, songs and a take home activity.
  6. Play a game. We have trivia, D & D, board games and match games.
  7. Get baking. Check out the variety of cake pans to create a masterpiece worthy of the Great British Baking Show.
  8. Learn something new. Our events include programs where teens can learn how to podcast, new entrepreneurs can take the next step to start a business, and anyone can get help with gadget help.
  9. Visit the Friends of the Library Book and Media Sale July 21 - 23.
