Outreach
The library is more than a place, and it is more than the people who make up its community. It is a platform that reaches throughout Shawnee County to extend lifelong learning to all. The library is mobile. Our outreach programs seek to nourish imaginations, improve quality of life and strengthen economic vitality in the community.
Community Outreach
The library’s Adventuremobile visits participating Shawnee County elementary schools every other week during the school year and provides a variety of children’s materials for students to check out.
We have a new way to take part in community events – we’re rolling in on the Book Bike. The bike is an environmentally friendly way to increase awareness of the library’s materials, events and services.
The library hosts or co-sponsors a great variety of book clubs for people of all reading interests. It’s a great way to meet friends, find fuel for your reading energies and enjoy an evening of book-worship or book debate.
Bookmobiles carry a wide variety of books, movies, and music for all ages with an emphasis on popular fiction and non-fiction. There are 20 bookmobile stops around the city and county.
In a joint partnership with the Parks and Recreation of Shawnee County, the library provides touch-screen computers and software for use at these Community Centers: Central Park, Crestview, Garfield, Hillcrest, Oakland, and Rice.
Turn your classroom into a fun learning environment with these free programs. Over 25 programs on animals, science, language and fine art, or social studies.
The Outreach Storytellers have stories and activities to raise a reader, especially programs geared toward the 3-5 age range. The storytellers share 188 storytimes each month, lasting about 30 minutes per visit.
Red Carpet Services visits retirement complexes, adult care facilities, senior centers and meal sites with both regular and large print books, DVDs, activity materials and adaptive equipment.
The Book Locker is a convenient way to access the library at Fairlawn Plaza Mall and Oakland Community Center. Virtually anything in the library (books, movies, music and magazines) can be delivered to you and checked out there. You’ll be notified by phone or email when your items arrive.
The Speakers Bureau brings audiences quality speakers and trainers—specialists that will entertain, inspire or inform. Think of us the next time you’re looking for a speaker for your organization’s events.
