The Bookmark S3 E20: What motivates you to read?

Do you ever find yourself in a reading slump? Miranda, Autumn and Chris explore a recent article about Reading Motivation while discussing what motivates them to read.

It all started with this article Autumn read and shared with Chris and Miranda: "Are You Really a Reader if You Have to Motivate Yourself to Read Books?" It's OK to take offense because our hosts did. This started a conversation about the things that motivate us to read.

Starting with childhood, we were motivated to read by incentives with things like Book-It and the Accelerated Reader Program (ARP). Did you know the library has reading challenges to win prizes three times a year (winter, summer & fall)?  Most recently was the Winter Reading Challenge that motivated readers to record 3 books they read in January to earn a fancy winter mug.

Autumn said her motivation to read is to solve the puzzle or twist in the book she's reading. Sometimes it's merely the cover that draws her in. Miranda's reading motivation is escapism. She also often finds herself reading for a deadline. Chris is a mood-reader. He lets the book call to him and hopes it's the right book for the right time.

It's time to check in with our hosts about how they're doing with the "All Read" – A Burning by Megha Majumdar. Autumn and Miranda have finished it and Chris is almost done! The big discussion on the book will be on the podcast that comes out Feb 14.
