The power of outdoor play: Boosting mental & physical health

Playing in the Outdoors

My childhood was a whirlwind of outdoor adventures. From riding bikes and building forts to playing ball, those moments are etched in my memory. That kind of good, old-fashioned outdoor play is essential for a child's healthy development, especially in the early years. It offers unique experiences and learning opportunities, sparking creativity, critical thinking and endless fun.

Benefits of outdoor play

Research supports the value of outdoor play to provide a sensory-rich environment where a child’s experiences inspire and challenge their body and the mind. Other benefits of outdoor play include the following:

  • girl and grandpa playing in the woodsphysical strength & coordination
  • development of immune system
  • build self-awareness
  • builds a positive attitude to a healthy lifestyle
  • build friendships
  • strengthens agility and dexterity
  • sense of independence
  • boosts creativity

Young children are naturally active explorers. They instinctively move, run and jump. This is how a child learns and thrives. Make outdoor play a daily habit -seek out backyards, front yards, parks and playgrounds. Give your child the freedom and opportunity to make choices. Do they want to build in the sand or blow bubbles? Do they want to climb or swing?

Ensure outdoor play is child-driven play. This means that your child takes the lead in his / her play and the caregiver follows the child’s lead. Authentic outdoor play is based on the child and the child’s experiences. It is not adult directed, nor is it structured. Outdoor play provides the opportunity for your child and you to connect, to explore and to learn.
