Spring Bulbs Chase the Winter Doldrums

Forcing is when a plant is induced to produce out of its natural environment and ahead of schedule. While it’s true most bulbs need several weeks of chilling before they can bloom, paperwhites and amaryllis are native to countries in warm climates and don’t requiring chilling.

PaperwhitePaperwhite or Narcissus papyraceus, is a Mediterranean native and some varieties are yellow. They have a strong, sweet fragrance and an elegant, classic appearance. They can be grown in pebbles or any other creative growing medium that gives support for the roots.imagesH2E8BE8V
  • The water level should be kept high enough to reach the very bottom of the bulb but not enough to soak it.
  • You can include a table spoon or two of aquarium charcoal to keep the water from smelling funky.
  • Place them in a well-lighted area with a temperature of between 50 and 70 degrees.
  • They should bloom in about 4 to 6 weeks.
AmaryllisAmaryllis hippeastrum originated in South America and comes in various shades of red from pink to salmon. This showy, frilly flower also comes in white and some two-color combinations. They can also be forced in pebbles and water but may do better in soil.imagesDOJ8SETE
  • Plant one bulb in a cozy pot or several close together in a larger pot, but not touching.
  • Use well-draining soil and leave the top part of the bulb exposed.
  • Again, put in a well-lighted area with a temperature between 50 and 70 degrees.
  • You should see flowers in about 6 to 8 weeks.

Forcing does expend a lot of energy for the plant and most sources say you probably won’t get more than one round of blooms from the same bulbs. Other sources say if you plant them in the garden in the spring, they will eventually flower again.
