Sherlocked

Hi-Dee-Ho and Happy 2018! My recreational reading tastes are squarely centered in the mystery genre so I picked up IQ by Joe Ide last month. I mention this book because 1) it was super good, and 2) there were heavy overtones of Sherlock Holmes (read these reviews: NYT, NPR)! Those Sherlock overtones also got me thinking about the recent cinematic explosion of Sherlock variations out there. Do you have a favorite? Well I sure do.

  1. Sherlock

This version tops my list for several reasons – the super slick cinematography, the visual effects – from Watson’s wedding confetti to Holmes’s thought and deductions, and I do love the dulcet tones of Mr. Cumberbatch.

  2. Elementary

I really like how they Americanized this version. It made me a fan of Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, and I was super excited that they did a gender swap on Watson's character, which they did on purpose!

  3. Law & Order: Criminal Intent

Goren and Eames are one of my favorite detective teams and this series in the L&O franchise was by far the best in my opinion. It's definitely a more subtle version of Sherlock with Vincent D'Onofrio's character focusing on psychology to identify their perps.

  4. Sherlock Holmes

Honestly, I'm not a fan of Robert Downey Jr. However, I really enjoyed Guy Richie's directing style and I think Rachel McAdams is top-notch.
