Pelé - soccer star

Pelé has been in the news recently for selling his lifetime sports collection, including World Cup trophies. There's also been a major biographical drama film just released - Pelé: Birth of a Legend.

Who is Pelé? He is one of the greatest soccer stars of all time. A Brazilian, he was born in São Paulo state in 1940. He played for the Brazilian National Team at age 16 and won his first FIFA World Cup in 1958 while still a teen - then went on to win two more: 1962 (age 22) and 1970 (age 30).

Pelé is one of the notable figures in world soccer with great name recognition in the United States, and helped popularize the sport even after his retirement in the late 1970s.

For general information on him, his Wikipedia article is a good place to start.

The library has a number of Pelé-related materials.
