Meet Your Genealogy Librarian

Genealogy librarian Sherri Camp will help you connect to your roots and tell your family history using library resources. She wants everyone in our community to build a family tree.

"It’s fun!" Sherri said. "It’s solving mysteries and proving those old stories that were passed down from generations ago. When you can put a name and a face together with a place, in context of the other people who lived at the same time, it’s like solving a puzzle."

Sherri points out that family history is also a part of the wider scope of human history and that by learning about our heritage we learn how we are part of the continuum of time and where we fit into the picture.

"When we tell family history we tell the microhistory of our cities, states and our country," Sherri said. "It puts history into context and makes the struggles and the triumphs real. It teaches us compassion, it gives us strength, and helps us to feel proud of who we are and where we come from."

Genealogy can be full of surprises. As Sherri worked to fill out her family tree last year, she saw a name she recognized—Luella Minner, a 46-year veteran of your library. She was working with someone she is related to and didn't know it. You never know what you’ll find out when you start digging into the past.

Connect with your library for help getting started on your family tree. Sherri teaches computerized genealogy classes for beginning and experienced researchers at the library and at community centers around town. Check out our events calendar for genealogy programs.
