Learn & Play Bus builds school readiness

With the help of innovative community partners the library created the Learn & Play Bus as a unique and interactive service for families with young children. We used best practices and research on brain development to create the service and its curriculum. This research supports that play is the “work” of children. Purposeful and meaningful play maximizes a child’s learning. Play is at the heart of a child’s well-being and overall development.

The Learn & Play Bus delivers the library’s services to the youngest in our community. Families with young children birth to 5 years old are welcome. View the Learn & Play Bus schedule.

Building school readiness

The Learn & Play Bus is a mobile and fun early childhood learning space that helps build school readiness skills. The bus is full of age-appropriate materials and meaningful activities. We selected each item aboard the Learn & Play Bus with play, exploration and learning in mind. Activities are designed to help children get better at reasoning, solving problems, getting along with others, using language and developing other skills.

The bus appeals to young children with hands-on learning activities. A child’s natural curiosity and joy of discovery is utilized in the vital role of play in a child’s social, emotional, and intellectual development. The Learn & Play Bus has a special collection of popular book titles. This collection is full of all-time favorite books for children to look at, read, re-read and check out. These books are also representative of our diverse community.

Supporting the parent-child relationship

The parent-child relationship plays a significant role in building school readiness skills. On the Learn & Play Bus parents and other caregivers find a welcoming environment that supports the parent’s role as their child’s first teacher. The Learn & Play Bus is an excellent place to make connections with other parents. There is also community resource wall with information to help you parent a young child.
