Great Read Alouds: Autumn is for apples
The crisp taste of apples is a favorite flavor of fall. Whether baked in apple crisp, chopped into salsa or sliced with some peanut butter, I love apples! When you slice an apple with a child be sure to show them the star inside of the apple. Here are some of my favorite apple books for kids.
Apple Cake written by Dawn Casey & illustrated by Genevieve Godbout
Take a walk through the countryside with a girl and her dog. They are gathering ingredients for a delicious cake: honey from the bees, milk from the cows, and apples from the trees. This book is a simple celebration of nature’s gifts.
A recipe for apple cake at the end allows you and your child to share in the joyful gratitude.
I Want an Apple written by David Harrison & illustrated by David Catrow
This book has an award-winning author joined by an award-winning illustrator. You'll learn how the body works in this funny and informative book about a child who wants a snack.
"Beautifully illustrated and with spare writing, this work captures the complexity of human digestion in the body of a hungry girl. . . . The lyrical text is short; the snappy pace will engage children as they devour Catrow’s detailed, hand-drawn artwork. . . . This will make for a fun story time, where bodily functions can be the silliest."—School Library Journal
Apple and Magnolia written by Laura Gehl & illustrated by Patricia Metola
The stark silhouette of two trees on the cover invites the reader into a story of bonding and unlikely friendship. Britta visits her two favorite trees, Apple and Magnolia, every day. Though she can't explain it, she's sure they are best friends! Then one day, Magnolia's branches start to droop. Is there anything Britta – or Apple – can do to help?
"... Beautifully told and illustrated, this book is a gem on many levels. The relationship with wise Nana illustrates the importance of intergenerational stories; Britta's determination shows how strong girls can be, and it shows that we all have an impact on the natural world." –Joan Kindig, School Library Journal
