Great Read Alouds: Adventure Awaits!
You can have amazing adventures in picture books! I've highlighted some of my favorites. Read on, adventure awaits!
Little People, Big Dreams: Mae Jemison written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara & illustrated by Janna Morton
This inspiring book will keep your kid's attention as you learn about the outstanding life of scientist and astronaut Mae Jemison. As a young girl Mae dreamed of blasting into space. She was excited as she watched the Apollo Moon landing and wondered why all the astronauts were men.
Mae was so smart that she started college at 16 and was training to be a doctor at 20. Later her dreams came true when she was accepted to NASA's astronaut program. Mae became the first black woman to travel in space.
Little People, Big Dreams: Jane Goodall written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara & illustrated by Beatrice Cerocchi
Here's another inspiring story of a real life scientist. Jane Goodall has always loved animals and she went to study them in the wild as soon as she could. Jane lived with chimpanzees in their natural habitat and became famous for her pioneering approach to research. She continues to educate people on animal rights and environmental issues.
This book's engaging illustrations help tell the story of one of the world's best known scientists. Little People, Big Dreams books also start by describing the person as a child, which will help your child relate to the story.
LaRue Across America: Postcards from the Vacation by Mark Teague
Ike LaRue is everyone's favorite dog. In this story he travels across America with his owner Mrs. LaRue. Unfortunately for Ike, she agrees to take their neighbor's cats on this road trip. Throughout the book, Ike sends postcards about his adventures and misadventures (thanks, cats!).
Taking a Walk: Summer at the Seashore written by Sue Tarsky & illustrated by Claire London
This book will keep you busy as you join the fun of finding and counting all the things you see on an imaginary trip to the seashore. You'll find treasures – animals, seashells, beach balls, buckets and so much more. The repetition will help your kids read along and learn!
"The interaction afforded by this straightforward search, find, and identify recitation should encourage multiple readings. This eventful walk makes for a hardworking little book."―Kirkus Reviews
