Explore new Level 2 Tech Center
The Level 2 Tech Center is full of opportunities to increase your technology skills with cutting-edge equipment and software. The Tech Center opens Aug 15 with a fully-equipped digital art studio, two well-resourced recording studios, 30 computers and 5 small meeting rooms.
“Regardless of your skill level, the library has the staff, equipment, software and training to help you level up your tech game,” said library CEO Marie Pyko. "You can try new ideas, expand your skills and polish your projects without investing in the technology yourself."
Tools & spaces
The digital art studio includes Macs, Adobe Creative Suite software, a Cricut, 3D printer, 3D scanner and a laminator. Our recording studios are soundproofed up to 80 decibels. Both recording studios include high-quality microphones, recording software and recording equipment. The video recording studio also has a green screen.
Gretchen Spiker and India Yarborough, Greater Topeka Partnership, are going to be the first to use recording studio A when they broadcast the Aug 8, 2022, Topeka Talk podcast at 1pm.
The CoLab meeting rooms are equipped with monitors, webcams, speakers and software. These rooms are great for virtual meetings, remote work, and video interviews or consultations for up to 3 people. Computers with high-speed internet and Microsoft software are available throughout the Level 2 Tech Center.
Staff to help
We are gearing up to help you use the equipment and software in this new space. This includes directing you to training and resources to increase your skills and confidence with the tech available.
Our Emerging Technologies Librarian, Todd Smith, will often be in the Tech Center to answer questions. For the past 15 years Todd's role was helping library staff with technology. Now he's ready to use that experience to help you. Todd is friendly and practical in his advice. There will always be a staff person with technology training available in the Tech Center who can direct you to the resources you need.
"I’m looking forward to seeing what customers do creatively with these new tools and resources," said Todd. "I think cardholders will appreciate this space devoted to exploring and learning technology."
The library's business team will also support you to help with resume building, job hunting and legal forms available in the Level 2 Tech Center.
Training to get you started
To use a recording studio or the digital art studio you will need to take orientation classes to learn how to use the equipment. Once you’ve learned the basics in one of these classes, you can schedule time to use those areas. Check our event schedule.
Another great learning tool is LinkedIn Learning, which you can use free with your library card. Tech Center staff will help you find the best courses to help you accomplish your goals.
We'll help you take the next step to improve your job skills, art and craft projects, new business ideas, and video and audio recordings. You can work on whatever you’d like – podcasts, videos, photo editing, graphic design, vinyl lettering or almost anything else you dream up.
"I am looking forward to providing a supportive and encouraging setting for people to explore new technologies with confidence," said Debbie Stanton, Public Services Supervisor – Information & Learning. "I can’t wait to see and hear what people create in the space!"
