Election Day! Election Books for Kids

With the midterm elections here, school age children may have a few questions about the election process. Here are a few of my favorite election books that answer these questions in a fun, easy, and eye-catching way.

Duck for President by Doreen Cronin, Grades 1-3.

This book is a perfect introduction to the democratic process. This is a fun story about a duck who is tired of doing chores on the farm, the animals hold an election to replace Farmer Brown and Duck wins. Cronin’s humorous text with Betsy Lewin’s illustrations will please all ages in this funny story about running for, and the difficulties of holding office.

Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio, Grades 3-5.

Grace decides to run in her school's mock election. During the campaign Grace learns about the U.S. election process, especially the Electoral College, and the difficulties of facing a popular opponent.

Vote! By Eileen Christelow, Grades 4-6.

Vote! is narrated by a young girl and is about her mother’s campaign for mayor. The book covers the steps involved in an election, including, candidate's speeches, rallies, campaign work, and the importance of every vote.

If I Ran For President by Catherine Stier, Grades 4-6.

In this nonfiction book several children imagine what it would be like to run for U.S. President. The children think about all aspects of an election, from making bumper stickers and meeting new people to participating in debates and preparing platforms.

This nonfiction book covers everything about elections any beginning reader may want to know. Photos of actual elections give visual reality to the process.
