Community Poppy Project

Help the library and the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery commemorate WWI with a quick and fun craft project. We're encouraging everyone we know to make poppies that we will display outside the gallery in conjunction with our exhibits Kansans Go To War (Oct 1 - Dec 9) and Over There: Americans Abroad in World War I (Nov 9, 2018 - Jan 6, 2019). 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI.

We are hoping to have 1,977 poppies to display to represent all the Kansans who died in service during WWI. Find directions on making poppies from paper, fabric or yarn. Make as many poppies as you'd like and deliver them to the gallery by Sunday, October 28.

Kansans Go To War is an exhibit of Kansans role in WWI. Over There: Americans Abroad in World War I is a traveling exhibit of WWI military photography from the National Archives.

•        Small amounts of worsted weight black yarn and red yarn
•        Smaller Crochet hook, size G

Sl: slip stitch | Sc: single crochet | Ch: chain | Tr: triple crochet

Using black: Beginning Ch 2, 8 Sc in first chain, join with Sl to first Sc and fasten off.

Change color to red:* Insert hook into Sl of last round, pull up a loop of red and ch3. Tr 2 times into same stitch. Into next stitch, Tr 3 times, then Ch 3 and Sl into same stitch.

Repeat from * 3 times for remaining petals. Fasten off.
