Big Little Lies

Did you watch the Emmy Awards last month?

What I remember most about the evening was that Big Little Lies was a big winner this year with 8 wins – EIGHT! As kismet would have it I recently got the DVD after waiting in the request queue, so their Emmy wins kinda-sorta spurred me to action.

Full disclosure, I didn’t follow my own advice; I didn’t read the book first. It’s kind of an abomination for someone who identifies as a reader and always encourages reading the book first. So let me explain. If you haven’t heard, this show is based on the Liane Moriarty book by the same name. I did read an earlier book, The Husband’s Secret, a couple of years ago and hated it. It was just too soap-opera-ish for my reading tastes.

I did however want to watch the show because of the actors, plus I didn’t actually connect it to the book right away. Witherspoon, Kidman, Woodley, Kravitz and Dern. It’s definitely a lady centric series and Kidman certainly shined in her role. But really, when doesn’t she shine? It also crossed my mind that it was also a work-reunion for lots of them! Kravitz and Woodley were both in Divergent, and Dern and Witherspoon were in Wild.

So I watched it. I’m still not impressed with the story, but the performances were really good! What did you think of it?

Shannon is movie-obsessed and her infatuation with the silver screen can be traced back to a single event. After helping her move into her first apartment, her mom left her with this parting remark: “Don’t spend all your money at the movies!” From that point on, thanks to her library card, Shannon continues to feed her obsession! She is the library's Database Administrator.
