Up From the Roots: Growing Our Connection with Nature
Explore the soothing quality of the outdoors in our newest art exhibit Up From the Roots Dec 12, 2025 - Feb 15, 2026. The Alice C. Sabatini Gallery has been transformed into an art-filled garden. As you stroll through the gallery, you will be transported from your neighborhood into the wild outdoors to experience fun ways to connect with nature including cloud spotting, plant cultivation and nearby hiking trails.
When people become overwhelmed, they are encouraged to “stop and smell the roses.” Though a metaphor for looking at the beautiful things in life, there is some practical truth to the saying. Studies have shown that taking as little as five minutes a day to connect with nature can improve mood and health. Up From the Roots supports this connection.
Artists’ depictions of nature also give you a way to talk about the unique sensory qualities of the wild. Art from the library’s permanent collection, as well as poets and authors, helps us share our fondness for the natural world. Think about a time when you enjoyed being outdoors. How would you explain to a friend how the wind felt on your skin? Or the smell of a rainstorm? As you wander through the exhibit you will see how artists have taken on those challenges. Take some time in the gallery this winter to slow down, find tranquility and reconnect with nature.
