The New John Muir and the Ice that Started a Fire

2014 is the one hundredth anniversary of John Muir’s death, who is well known for his influence in establishing the National Parks, but his interest in the natural world was all encompassing. Starting in 1879 Muir traveled to Alaska igniting his fascination with glaciers which would impact perceptions of glaciers and Alaska. Muir would make numerous trips to Alaska over the years, but he was also married and had two daughters and there was a constant pull between the wilderness and his family.

This is a personal biography that delves into Muir as man while at the same time examines his studies and work in Alaska. This book is well researched and fitting read in recognition of Muir.
