The Joy of Flying in Amelia Earhart: The Thrill of It

Amelia EarhartAmelia Earhart became an American icon through her flying, but her journey to become a pilot was not an easy one. She was born in Atchison, Kansas in 1897 when society did not encourage women to pursue a life of adventure. This was also a time of invention and the beginning of flying and airplanes which captured the public’s and Amelia’s imagination.

Pilots faced untold dangers in these fragile planes but that did not stop them or Amelia from trying to break records and do what they loved. Amelia Earhart: The Thrill of It by Susan Wels is about the creation of Amelia Earhart the hero. This biography examines Amelia’s life from her struggles and flying to her troubled family and complicated marriage. This book is full of photographs that bring the visual imagery to life.

Though aviation is no longer in its infancy the joy of flight and the thrill of flying is still quite real and here’s a chance to share this excitement with a young person. On June 13th at 10:00 am at Billard Airport is Live to Fly: Pilots and Planes for ages 8-18. This program will have pilots and their planes, featuring Michele Stauffer from Kansas Aircraft Corporation, planes from Hetrick Aviation, and the Air Explorers.
