National Treasures

Redwoods along Prairie Creek

Redwood National Park

How many U.S. National Parks have you visited? There are 61 designated National Parks and more than 400 areas in the National Park System. I remember visiting at least eight parks with my family, but I didn’t realize how many there were until I started a Pinterest page!

National parks preserve the beauty, grandeur and history of our country. These parks give us a place to experience nature at its most awesome. Choose your scenery – snow-covered mountains, primeval forests, glittering waters or heart-stopping deserts. Twenty-nine states plus American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands have national parks. This gives us a variety of climates to choose. At each park you can be active or just soak up the atmosphere.

Every park has its special attractions, unique wildlife and education opportunities. I love to hike the Rocky Mountain National Park trails up to Emerald Lake. Recently I hiked in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park among the cool, giant trees. This experience was so different from the Rocky Mountains.

Besides national parks, there are national monuments like the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument, national preserves like the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and historical parks, historic sites, military sites and battlefields.

Check out our books and DVDs on national parks in general and individual parks to help you plan your trip. If you're thinking of visiting often, check out the passes and discounts. If you like mysteries, Nevada Barr, Christine Carbo, Scott Graham and Karen Barnett set their whodunits in national parks.
