Artsy Crafty Library: Beginner knitting project
content
Like anything new, learning to knit can be intimidating. I recommend starting with a simple item you can use – a dishcloth. This is great because it will be useful even if it's not beautiful. I suggest making several of these to build your confidence before you move on to something you or a loved one is going to wear.
Materials
Cotton yarn – 57g
- Size 7 knitting needles
- Scissors
- Darning needle
Learning the techniques
Below are the techniques I used to make this beginner dishcloth (or it can be a washcloth). I included links from Creativebug. To access these fantastic videos all you need is your library card!
- co – cast on
- k – knit
- yo – yarn over increase stitch
- k2tog – knit 2 stiches together decrease stitch
- bo – bind off
Instructions
Cast on 4 stiches
- Row 1: Knit 4
- Row 2: Knit 2, yo, k rest of row
- Repeat Row 2 until you have 48 stitches
- Row 3: Knit 1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k rest of row
- Repeat Row 3 until you have 4 stitches
- Bind off until you have one stitch left.
- Leaving several inches, cut your yarn. Using your darning needle slip your tail through the last stich and pull.
- Weave in your cast on and bind off yarn.
- You did it!
