2019 - People, Pride, and Promise: The Story of the Dockum Sit-In

July 15 - August 18, 2019

People, Pride, and Promise: The Story of the Dockum Sit-In is a traveling exhibit that commemorates the 60th anniversary of American's first successful student-led lunch counter sit-in.

This exhibit explores how early Civil Rights Era lunch counter protests helped shape and transform the struggles for racial equality in America.

Through visual presentations and hands-on experiences, you will get to know the little known story of the Dockum Sit-In. The exhibit features a replica lunch counter and images from a children's book that commemorates this momentous event.

KMUW, Wichita's NPR radio station, has a nice synopsis on the 60th anniversary of the sit-in, "Hope for the Future: The Dockum Sit-In, Sixty Years On."

People, Pride, and Promise: The Story of the Dockum Sit-In was created by Storytime Village with funding from Humanities Kansas. The exhibit will be on display in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery July 15 - Aug 18.
