Processing Assistant

Staff photoThe Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library is looking for a Processing Assistant that has excellent organizational skills and is self-motivated.

This position plays a role in ensuring library collections are accurately labeled enabling quick access and retrieval. The Processing Assistant prepares physical library materials for circulation and applies labels, jacket covers, RFID tags and library property identifiers to collections.

As the Processing Assistant some things you will do are:

  • Apply property stamps, RFID tags, classification and genre labels to library collections.
  • Package, cover, secure and reinforce library materials for durability and ease-of-use.
  • Change collection code status in integrated library system (ILS) to reflect current item location.
  • Maintain the library’s physical newspaper and magazine collections. Place new issues of newspapers and magazines in the periodicals collection and removes old issues. Shelve permanently retained issues in the periodicals storage area.
  • Restock circulating kits containing consumable supplies or activity kits. Package activity kit refills as needed to maintain circulation of specific kits.
  • Repair damaged library books using the library’s CoverOne repair system. Assess books to determine if they can be repaired in-house or need to go to the bindery.
  • Assist with unpacking and organization of new materials.
  • Assist with collection maintenance duties including inventory, searching material lists, and performing data entry tasks that relate to collections.
  • Assist with special projects and teams as assigned by manager.
  • Maintain prompt arrival and efficiently and dependably maintains scheduled hours.

Position Requirements/Preferences

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong service orientation.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Competent computer skills in Microsoft Office 365, email, and internet searching techniques, operating copiers, printers, facsimile, telephones, and audio/visual equipment.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and complete multi-step manual processes repetitively with high accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently on core duties and collaborate with others to meet deadlines for daily work and special projects.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing in a professional manner with work colleagues and supervisors.
  • Ability to manage schedule to complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours, arrive promptly and maintain regular and reliable attendance.

A pre and/or post-employment drug screen, criminal history record check and physical capacity testing are required as a condition of employment.

SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday 40 hours per week during normal business hours. Flexible schedule can be determined upon hire. This is an onsite position.  

PAY & BENEFITS: Starting hourly rate will be in the range of $11.22 to $14.02 depending on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits including health & dental insurance with pre-tax premiums, and a retirement plan (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System KPERS). Group life, disability coverage and accidental death benefits are also provided. Other optional benefits available at employee's expense include vision, life and cancer insurance and a deferred compensation plan.
