Communications & Marketing Director

The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library is seeking a dynamic Communications & Marketing Director to lead our efforts in shaping the library’s voice and vision. About the Role
As a key member of our Administration team, you’ll be the driving force behind our communication, marketing, and public relations strategies. You’ll serve as the library’s spokesperson, manage media relations, and ensure our message resonates across all platforms. From crafting compelling campaigns to overseeing creative content, you’ll help us inspire curiosity and engagement in our community.

What You’ll Do

  • Formulate and manage communications and marketing goals for the library and manage and coordinate projects that keep our library relevant and vibrant.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of Communications & Marketing Department. Schedule and assign department production work.
  • Serve as our primary spokesperson and point of contact for media, ensuring the library’s mission is clearly heard across Topeka & Shawnee County and beyond.  
  • Provide the CEO and library management strategic counsel related to communications, public relations and marketing. 
  • Supervise, lead, coach, develop, mentor, and complete performance reviews for a talented team of a Graphic Designer, a Communication Content Specialist, a Multimedia/Web Administrator, and a Social Media specialist to turn ideas in to high-impact ideas. Provides professional development opportunities for staff to assist with developing and improving job-related skills.
  • Direct internal and external marketing and communications initiatives.
  • Approve, develop, supervise, negotiate and implement effective advertising and other forms of communications including social media.
  • Oversee the production/creation of print and digital marketing content collateral including website pages and articles, social media, radio/television/online broadcasting and digital/print signage for the library.
  • Develop and manage marketing of library programs and events.
  • Negotiate competitive pricing for collateral and media. 
  • Submit and manage annual communications and marketing budget for the library and work in coordination with managers and supervisors on marketing needs for departments.
  • Represent the library in the community.
  • Serve as a member of the Senior Director and Management Team and help set the vision and goals for the library.

What We’re Looking For
Required Education & Experience
:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, mass communications, marketing, public relations or other degree as determined relevant by the library.
  • Five years of experience planning and administering communications and marketing projects and campaigns.
  • Three years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with insurable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of communication and marketing.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft office products and Adobe Creative Suite products.
  • Ability to evaluate library services and to develop and implement new or improved methods.
  • Ability to provide leadership and guidance throughout the organization as it pertains to communication and marketing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, develop, motivate, train, and supervise people.
  • Ability to manage and implement large scale projects.
  • Ability to understand and utilize data to make decisions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze information from multiple perspectives and make sound decisions and recommendations.
  • Ability to develop professional relationships and interact effectively with Library staff at all levels, members of the Library boards, library and community partners and the public.
  • Ability to prepare and make effective presentations.
  • Ability to function effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work with other managers and supervisors in planning and directing the effective use of resources including staff.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours, arrive promptly and maintain regular and reliable attendance

Preferred Experience:

  • Two years of experience serving as a spokesperson for a company or organization, including media inquiries.

Additional Information
SCHEDULE:
This is a full-time exempt position that works 40 hours per week Monday through Friday. Some occasional nights and weekends may be required. 
 

PAY & BENEFITS: Starting pay will be in the range of $81,120.00 to $91,249.60 annually depending on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits including health & dental insurance with pre-tax premiums, and a retirement plan (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System KPERS). Group life, disability coverage and accidental death benefits are also provided. Other optional benefits available at employee's expense include vision, life and cancer insurance and a deferred compensation plan.
