Public Services Supervisor
The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, the Library Journal 2016 Library of the Year, is looking for a Public Services Supervisor who is an effective communicator, organized, and enthusiastic who also has a passion for what libraries do to impact literacy, learning and quality of life in our community.
This position is responsible for coordinating and implementing services and supervising staff members in the Public Services Readers & Resources Team. These services include literacy, readers and reading, and community resources.
As the Public Services Supervisor some of the things you will do are:
- Supervise staff: Directly supervise employees by training, coaching, counseling, and completing performance evaluations. Manage and supervise daily operations by monitoring schedules and assigning projects. Work directly with all Public Services staff on the service floor, in team meetings and one on one.
- Coordinate Project teams: Organize staff and volunteers into teams and determines the work to be accomplished and who will complete the work
- Staff Performance: Provide ongoing feedback to staff about performance and completes staff evaluations, timecards, and reports in a timely manner.
- Hiring and Onboarding staff: In concert with the Public Services Manager, determine staffing needs and the hiring process in Public Services.
- Service Planning: Implement policies and procedures and assist with development of annual goals for the Department.
- Collaborate with supervisors across the organization to strategically deploy staff resources efficiently and effectively.
- Complete work assignments in a timely manner.
- Provide leadership and initiative in helping others to achieve their training goals.
- Advocate for staff ideas and work towards implementation.
- Keep current on trends in libraries, literacy, and learning, and make recommendations for changes and improvements based on knowledge and experience.
- Maintain technology competency at a level determined by the Library.
- Maintain prompt arrival and efficiently and dependably maintain scheduled hours.
- Serve as an active member and participant of the Library’s Management Team and other leadership teams or committees.
- Serve on committees as assigned.
Position Requirements & Preferences:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Three years of customer service experience.
Preferred:
- One year of previous library work experience.
- One year of previous supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of readers’ advisory and reference techniques, collection development principles and practices.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude and a strong service orientation.
- Strong planning, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to guide, develop and motivate staff.
- Ability to handle confidential information in a professional manner.
- Ability to work with other Library managers and supervisors in planning and directing the effective use of resources, including staff.
- Ability to plan and organize work procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and customers.
- Ability to operate Microsoft Office Suite software applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability read and write comprehensively.
- Ability to meet the public with poise and self assurance, and to deal tactfully and courteously with library customers.
- Ability to function effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to work scheduled hours, arrive promptly and maintain regular and reliable attendance.
A pre and/or post-employment drug screen, criminal history record check and physical capacity testing are required as a condition of employment.
SCHEDULE: 40 hours a week. Primarily M – F 8am – 5pm, with occasional evenings and weekends.
PAY & BENEFITS: Starting pay will be in the range of $54,392 to $67,995.20 annually depending on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits including health & dental insurance with pre-tax premiums, and a retirement plan (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System KPERS). Group life, disability coverage and accidental death benefits are also provided. Other optional benefits available at employee’s expense include vision, life and cancer insurance and a deferred compensation plan.
