The Alamo

As we approach the summer season, many people are planning a vacation.  Of course, keeping the budget down continues to be a high priority.

Remember, the key to Traveling on the Cheap is to DO YOUR HOMEWORK!  Your Library has a variety of resources to help.

While planning a recent trip to San Antonio, I discovered that the Library Travel Neighborhood has a San Antonio Travel Bag.  Inside the bag you’ll find guide books, maps and brochures to many of the popular attractions.

Since this was a driving trip, airline and car rental were not necessary.  Lodging was then the most important factor.  Remember, research the key.  Visit multiple websites, individual hotel and national travel sites to find the best deal.  Your Library even has public computers for you to use! In San Antonio, great economic choices are just blocks away from the downtown area.

Local attractions are the heart of any vacation.  Again, check online (or in the Travel Bag) for discount ideas.  Which attractions are free (The Alamo, Japanese Tea Gardens)? Do any have a discount or coupon day (1/2 price after 5PM, kids get in free on tuesdays)?  I learned that some Downtown San Antonio attractions were closed due to a parade.

Mealtimes can get expensive, but budget options are out there.  Instead of hitting the super-trendy-touristy place, why not try to smaller restaurant that’s popular with the locals.  It may be a little out of the why, but often worth the effort.

Overall, with proper planning and plenty of research you can have a fun an exciting vacation while staying within budget.  Your Library’s resources are right at your fingertips.
