The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Obituary Index is part of our most valuable genealogy research tools. It helps hundreds of people each year search for their ancestors or loved ones who lived and/or died in Topeka and the surrounding area.

If you cannot find the person of interest in our index, use the form below to send us the name and the day, month and year of death and we will search our microfilm records.

This service is free to all Kansas residents.

How to Make a Request

  1. Search the obituary index to find the person of interest.
  2. Fill out the obituary request form and submit the form.

Please limit search to obituaries of persons who lived in Topeka or Shawnee County or whose obituary would have appeared in the local Topeka newspapers.

Once you’ve found the obituaries you are looking for, follow these steps:

  1. Copy the catalog listing from the Obituary Index
  2. Paste the catalog listing in one of the online request forms below
  3. Submit up to 10 names per request
  4. Add your contact information
  5. Submit the form
