The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library is seeking a child advocate dedicated to ensuring that young children develop school readiness skills through storytelling services. This includes, but is not limited to book sharing, music, movement, finger plays, puppetry, and digital mediums. Candidate will need knowledge of early childhood development and the ability to apply said knowledge to planning and implementation of related programming for children and adults. Candidate must possess excellent communication skills, a strong, clear speaking voice that can handle up to 5 hours of talking to audiences each day, and group management skills appropriate to working with young kids.
A part time Youth Services Specialist: Outreach Storyteller’s primary role is to provide storytelling services to licensed childcare facilities within the Shawnee County service area. Each storyteller develops, conducts and evaluates story programs. Other associated duties include scheduling of that service. Internal programs are also a requirement and include story programs and workshops for child care providers. Additionally a storyteller is responsible for assisting with work at service points throughout the library. That work includes reader advisory and reference, collection upkeep, service area maintenance, visual merchandizing, digital branch content creation and tours. To provide for customers, the storyteller must be able to utilize print, DVD, and technological resources.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required. Prefer a degree in education or related field
- Previous library experience preferred
- Previous customer service experience, with dedication to quality
- Knowledge of reader’s advisory, reference techniques, and children’s literature
- Strong organizational and problem solving skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently, be flexible and adapt to a fast-paced work environment
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
Other requirements: This position requires working knowledge of library technology including but not limited to computers, copiers, digital cameras, and audio/visual equipment. The work area may contain book dust, molds, mildew and insects. This medium work position requires manual dexterity, bending, lifting /carrying at least 20 pounds, ability to exert 20-50 pounds of force when pushing/pulling materials weighing at least 20 pounds, reaching, the ability to climb stairs, talking on the telephone and stationary work at a computer terminal. This position works in a shared office environment with a need for cooperative interaction in many different circumstances. Prompt arrival and efficient, dependable maintenance of scheduled hours is a necessity. A pre-and/or post-employment drug screen, negative TB screening, a criminal history record check, physical capacity testing, valid Kansas driver license with insurable driving record, and a reliable personal vehicle are required as a condition of employment.
Pay and benefits: Range begins at $15.35/hour, part time 20 hours/week. Evening and weekend hours are required. Excellent benefits include health & dental insurance, retirement (KPERS), life insurance, long-term disability insurance, sick leave, and vacation.
