Metadata and Cataloging Librarian

Primary Responsibilities

  • Catalogs and classifies physical library materials using OCLC for input into library’s ILS, Polaris Library system.
  • Manages and processes electronic cataloging records into Polaris Library system.
  • Creates original cataloging records for input into OCLC and Polaris Library system.
  • Ensures quality of bibliographic and digital databases through compliance with national and local standards including MARC, AACR2, RDA, LCSH, LCRI, DDC, OCLC, Dublin Core, & MODS cataloging practices and other appropriate cataloging/metadata standards.
  • Manages the quality control of all metadata.
  • Analyzes, designs, and applies solutions to collection issues and opportunities.
  • Participates in library digital projects using digital collections software. Keeps abreast of developments in electronic publishing.
  • Develops documentation for the creation and application of metadata and provides training and consultation to library staff and the public library community about metadata.
  • Provides leadership in the area of metadata management within the library environment through participation in departmental, cross-departmental, and cross-organization projects.
  • Assists in the development of plans, practices, workflows and priorities within the department and library.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, procedures, materials and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of cataloging and classifying physical and electronic library materials; in-depth knowledge of using OCLC Connexion and an integrated library system, Polaris preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant metadata standards and guidelines (RDA, FRBR, AACR2, MARC, Dewey decimal classification and subject headings).
  • Proficiency with metadata creation and experience with non-MARC metadata standards.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies related to cataloging and public libraries.
  • Ability to function effectively as a team participant, leader, and facilitator.

Education and Experience

  • This position requires a Master’s degree from a school of library or information science program accredited by the American Library Association, or equivalent combination of education and experience performing cataloging duties.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experiencing cataloging in a library setting preferred.
  • Experience training staff including staff outside Technical Services with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, strong interpersonal skills, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force;
  • work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts;

Pay & Benefits  Pay grade begins at $42,500 and may be higher depending on qualifications.
