Community Services (Bookmobile) Librarian: Passion for Learning/Engaged Readers/Best Life

The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and articulate leader who is committed to working with community members throughout their lives to help them find ways to gain a passion for learning, become engaged readers, and live their best lives. The successful candidate will serve as a project leader for all Community Services plans, programs and projects related to Community Services. This work will include project management, team development, service planning and implementation, collaborative community planning, advocacy, and excellent customer service.

As the Community Services (Bookmobile) Librarian you will:

  • Plan: In cooperation with the Community Services Supervisor develops service plans for the ongoing activities related to Community Services. Assists in development of the long and short range plans for services. Explores options for inclusion/exclusion of resources, collections and initiatives. Prepares service plans through environmental scanning and research.
  • Develop a Team: Organizes staff into teams and assigns them tasks needed to be done to accomplish the goals of the Community Services plan. Facilitates the work of the team and assigns staff to appropriate tasks. Verifies that tasks have been accomplished as assigned. Coaches staff as needed. Provides feedback to supervisor if staff are not completing tasks as assigned. Provides supervisor with a written report at least once a year on each staff member assigned tasks.
  • Train: Oversees the scheduling, coordination and facilitation of all staff driver’s training including CDL licensing. Works with trainers to prepare and revise curriculum for the Library’s CDL Driver’s Training Program to comply with Federal and State regulations and to maintain certification. Coordinates and schedules road test examinations for CDL applicants.
  • Promote: Acts as spokesperson for Community Services including but not limited to media outlets and events, booths and presentations in the community. Assists with the production of division publicity as needed. Markets Community Services on television, in newspapers and online with digital marketing resources. Organizes several events, programs or booths annually related to Community Services.
  • Act as a Community Liaison: Establishes and maintains strong relationships with appropriate community organizations. Involved in initiatives targeted to outreach services. Determines who are the community groups with a common area of interest and meet them. Looks for opportunities to cooperate and/or collaborate with community groups to increase awareness of the library’s resources. Evaluates opportunities to collaborate on resources, programs and initiatives focused directly with customer needs.
  • Develop Programs: Presents and coordinates programs in a variety of formats out in the community. Assists in developing and implementing programming initiatives that meet Community Services goals and objectives.
  • Evaluate: Evaluates the success of current initiatives, collections and programs and make recommendations for new projects. Develops a tool to review successes, challenges and opportunities for improvement within Community Services. Evaluates the service plan annually. Makes recommendations for improvements or elimination of the service plan.
  • Lead: Implements the concepts outlined in The Leadership Challenge. Acts as lead staff while on service desk or while working on the service floor. Monitors, troubleshoots and reports technology or maintenance issues to supervisor and/or overseeing departments. Assists with hiring and training of new staff members. Communicates with supervisory staff regarding day-to-day departmental issues that need resolving. Assists in the development and implementation of library operating policies and procedures.
  • Provide Customer Service: Follows library hospitality guidelines while working on the Bookmobile and all other public service desks. Safely operates library vehicles such as bookmobiles, trucks and vans. Obtains and maintains a Class B CDL with air brakes endorsement. Assists adults and children with finding information by conducting reference interviews and answering questions; recommends library materials to adults and children using reader’s advisory techniques; assists customers in use of electronic resources; resolves account problems for customers. Provides information and materials to the public including assistance in locating library materials, information and use of equipment. Files and performs data entry tasks that relate to the status of bookmobile materials such as file, restock shelves, and check out / check in of materials.

Position Requirements/Preferences


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Two years of direct customer service experience in a library
  • Dedication to quality customer service
  • Knowledge of reader’s advisory and reference techniques
  • Excellent technology skills including library technology, office software applications, digitization, and internet publishing
  • Ability to obtain valid Kansas Class B Commercial Driver license with air brakes endorsement and insurable driving record within 6 months of hire date
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, be flexible and adapt to a fast-paced work environment
  • This position requires bending, lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds, pushing/pulling materials weighing up to 20 pounds, reaching, the ability to climb stairs, talking on the telephone and stationary work at a computer terminal
  • Prompt arrival and efficient, dependable maintenance of scheduled hours is a necessity.
  • Day, evening and weekend hours are required


  • A Master’s degree in library or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association

PAY & BENEFITS: Salary range begins at $42,502.01 annually. Excellent benefits including health & dental insurance with pre-tax premiums, and a retirement plan (KPERS). Group life, disability coverage and accidental death benefits are also provided. Other optional benefits available at employee’s expense include vision, life and cancer insurance and a deferred compensation plan.
