Trivia Answer. d.) June 26, 1870. In the U.S., it was not consistently celebrated across ethnic, religious and geographic divides for much of our history. Puritans condemned the holiday. Louisiana was the first state to declare Christmas a state holiday in 1837. 33 years later U.S. Congress followed suit.
