The Teen Advisory Board acts as the voice of Topeka & Shawnee County teens by advising staff on program development and implementation and assisting with library projects.

TAB members:

  • Are area middle and high school teens who are dedicated to the Library as a place for Teens.
  • Provide valuable information to Library staff of youth trends, fads, and pop culture to discover their passion for learning
  • Provide insight into the social, academic, vocational, and emotional needs of teens and ways to live their best life
  • Develop displays and help the library market to teens
  • Facilitate programs and services at the library for their peers to make Shawnee County Teens an engaged community of readers.
  • Are active users of library services and programs and educate others about the library
  • Attend, participate in, and represent the library at other events, including but not limited to, the Retreat with the Library Board of Directors, Teen Week Author visit, Teen Tech Week events, and Summer learning.
  • Represent the Library with external community partners, e.g. Teen STEAM/ 712 Innovations, Washburn University, YWCA, YMCA, United Way, Dolly Parton Imagination Library among others.
  • Be a conduit of Library information and events to their schools and other groups.

Required for membership:

  •  Must be a resident of Shawnee County and adjacent counties between the ages of 14 and 19.
  •  Must submit a completed application
  •  Must have a current Library card or actively working to remove fees or fines.
  •  Participate in monthly meetings, with limited excused absences
  •  Meetings are held from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm at the library the first and third Wednesdays of each month unless otherwise specified.
  •  Attend, represent the library and participate in other meetings as determined necessary TAB and the Staff of the Library, including but not limited to, the Retreat with the Library Board of Directors, Teen Week Author visit, Teen Tech Week events, Summer learning.
  • Represent the Library with external community partners, e.g. Teen STEAM/ 712 Innovations, Washburn University, YWCA, YMCA, United Way, Dolly Parton Imagination Library among others.
