Hey friends! Welcome back to Teen Art Club. Wanting to spice up your space for Valentines Day? Let’s make a super simple and super cute Valentine’s Garland! It’s so easy to make, the only question is whether to gift it to your Valentine or keep it for yourself.
What You Need
- Cardboard – cut into the shape of hearts
- Yarn – LOTS of yarn (seriously, so much yarn)
- An abundance of patience and time
While this project is simple, it does consume a fair amount of time. The good news is once you’ve prepared your materials the craft is simple enough that you can watch a show or movie, listen to music, or get lost in an audiobook while you work on it. Luckily, your library card gives you access to Hoopla where you can find oodles of entertainment to distract yourself from the seemingly endless wrapping of yarn.
Let’s Get Started
Begin by selecting the space you intend to hang your garland to determine the size you want to make it. If you’re giving it as a gift to your Valentine, just add as many hearts as you need to convey your affection. Use scissors to cut your hearts out of cardboard and to pierce the heart at the point you want it to hang from. Then you will push your length of twine through the hole and adjust its position.
Wrap it Up
Now it is time to show off your rapping skills – my bad, I mean your wrapping skills. Fine, it’s a cheesy joke. I’m moving on. Choose your yarn and tape the end to one side of your heart. Now you will wrap the heart shape until you can no longer see the cardboard peeking through. Remember to keep a grip on your twine so it doesn’t get tangled in your yarn. Once you are satisfied with your wrap, tie a knot in the twine above your heart- this ensures it will hang facing forward. I didn’t do this on mine and had to jump through some hoops to make mine lay nicely. Proceed to the next heart and repeat!
This is one of my favorite projects we have done. I love the simplicity of it and the adorable outcome. I also really love that I can listen to an audiobook while I work on wrapping my hearts without missing parts of the story or messing up my garland. This is also a good time to work on your social distancing pickup lines – we’d love to hear yours!
No, seriously! Share your best and funniest (appropriate) social distancing pickup lines! I’ll go first. “I’m just a girl, standing six feet away from you. Asking you to maybe move back another foot. Thanks.”
