Friends meeting brings funds & new roles

(Topeka, Kan.) — The Friends of the Topeka Library donated $100,000 in 2014.
At the annual gathering of the members of the Friends of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Nov. 2, 2014, members learned just how much of a profound impact the library advocacy organization has made in 2014.

This year, the Friends donated

A total of $100,000 to the library for services, pilot programs, collection development and more
$7,000 to the Alice C. Sabatini Art Gallery for its annual print competition and in support of First Friday receptions
$17,000 to library employee recognition
$39,000 to replacement bookmobile purchase
$12,000 to purchase equipment for the Make-It-Lab, which will open Dec. 8
In addition to the total donation, the Friends also awarded a total of $5,500 to 5 staff members in academic scholarships
New board members were announced at the Friends Annual Meeting Nov. 2:
Linda Hayes, Carol Ball, Anne Starbuck and Ken Peterson. Lisa Sandmeyer has completed her three year term and will begin a new term in 2015.

Outgoing board members are:
Sherryl Longhofer, Warren Taylor, Tom Muth, Adrian Allen and Lesley Brancaccio.

The 2015 nominated slate of officers are:

Linda Hayse, president
Rome Mitchell, vice-president
Ruth Dickinson, secretary
Jerry Reed, treasurer
“In 2015, we will focus on raising awareness of membership opportunities,” said Mary Campbell, Friends manager. “This community is so fortunate to have such a wonderful library. We want people to recognize that and proudly join our efforts to support it.”

About the Friends
The Friends of the Library began as an advocacy group in 1971 and has been fervently supporting the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library ever since, donating nearly 1.5 Million dollars since its inception.

The Friends operate the Chandler Booktique, the annual Book Sale, online sales and Bag Day sales and have consistently raised over $100,000 a year for the library since 2011.
