Daniel Tiger comes to the library neighborhood

Topeka, Kan. — Fans of Daniel Tiger are in for a surprise when the beloved character from the PBS KIDS program, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, makes a special appearance during storytime at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library at 10 a.m. Tues. Aug. 19 and Thurs. Aug. 21 in the Story Zone.

“Kids are familiar with the character, but being able to meet him up close and to see how he comes alive is a powerful thing,” said Marie Pyko, director of public services.

The focus of storytime will be about the experience of becoming a big brother or sister. KTWU HD 11.1 will air the first episode of the new season of Daniel Tiger Mon. Aug. 18 in which Daniel meets his new baby sister, Margaret. Children who attend the library’s storytime will read books about becoming a sibling.

“Having the books available is a great thing for kids who are struggling with the idea of having a new sibling,” said Pyko. “We’ll have all the pieces gathered together to talk about it in a fun and exciting way that’s on their level. Not only is that good for the children, it’s also helpful to their parents.”

Topeka 4D Ultrasound will be at the library to show children a sonogram image of Daniel Tiger’s baby sister and let them listen to her heartbeat. Then they’ll get to meet Daniel Tiger himself for hugs and high fives.

Every family in attendance will receive a plush Daniel Tiger toy, along with other door prizes.
