Heroes Now & Then

Whether it's digging up the heroes (or villians!) in your own family history or celebrating people from the past who helped make this world a better place to live, we hope you'll spend some time this week thinking about inspiring history heroes and how you'll leave your mark.

Superhero Training Tip of the Week

This week's tip is from Missty Lechner of the American Heart Association.  The American Heart Association is working to build healthier lives, free from cardiovascular diseases and stroke for all Americans through research, education, and community change initiatives.

Become a Heart Hero!

Heart superheroSuperheroes come in all shapes and sizes with an amazing array of special powers. While we can enjoy pretending to have super powers, there is one kind of hero that anyone can become. A Heart Hero is someone that fights heart disease, both in themselves and in those around them. This means that they are taking the necessary steps to have a healthy lifestyle and encouraging others to join them. Even small children are capable of understanding the difference between good and bad choices. While it is not fun to hear “No, you can’t have a cookie.” The choices can be explained and a young heart hero can learn how to make better choices for themselves and take an active role in finding alternatives. A Heart Hero not only eats healthy, but exercises every day and can lead everyone in the family on an adventure.

Heart Heroes can undertake their own mission to support the cause through their school with Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart, or at the Heart Walk on September 19, 2015. Visit our webpage for more information on the Heart Walk, including information on the free kid-friendly activities and food.

Featured Digital Item

Brave Girl / Michelle MarkelRead Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909 by Michelle Markel.  As an immigrant and young woman, Clara spent long hours at the shirtwaist factory instead of at school. But Clara never accepted that girls should be treated poorly and paid little. Fed up with the mistreatment of her fellow laborers, Clara led the largest walkout of women workers the country had seen. Clara and her friends stood together and fought for their rights. This book is kid-approved:  my 7-year-old said it was "awesome!"  Be inspired by the uncrushable Clara and other strong women, and don't forget to log the time you spend reading on your time tracker!
