Gear up for a family winter hike
I loved hiking as a kid. It was full of endless adventures and discoveries. Many of my childhood “adventures” were a trek in a neighborhood park. Hiking as a family, especially with young children, may require some additional planning, but it is very rewarding.
Being outside is beneficial for everyone. Research supports nature's positive boost to your mood. As you hike, you’re often negotiating an unpaved trail, which is good for your mind and body. Another study showed that taking a hike outdoors increases our creativity and attention span.
Winter hiking tips
- Wear layers.
- Begin with kid-friendly trails and distances.
- Take breaks and bring snacks and drinks.
- Enjoy the journey and make it fun. You can play "I spy" or start out with a list of items to find like a scavenger hunt. Sing a song while you hike.
- Consider different locations.
- Be flexible and mindful of how everyone feels. (Is anyone cold?)
- Be prepared. (Pack diaper wipes, chap stick, etc.)
- Be observant. (Look for animal tracks.)
- Offer encouragement and praise.
- Bring dry clothes for the ride home if it's rainy or snowy.
