All Things Trumpet
Come and join us on March 7th for a spectacular recital featuring trumpeter, Dr. Michael Averett, trumpet professor at Washburn University. This recital will feature virtuoso playing from old music to new music; from the 17th century to the 21st Century! The recital will feature select compositions from Avalon, Michael Averett’s debut solo album, as well as compositions by Bach, Vivaldi, John Stevens, John Cheetham, Kevin McKee and Carl Hohne. You don’t want to miss it Averett has been invited to perform at the National Trumpet Competition and the International Trumpet Guild Conference. He has received concerto competition prizes and has been a guest recitalist and clinician throughout the southeast and midwestern U.S. with high school and university wind ensembles, orchestras and marching bands. Averett has also performed internationally in Australia, Mexico, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and China. Before coming to WU, he held positions and performed with Columbus Philharmonic, Marion Philharmonic, Muncie Symphony, Orquestra Sinfonicia of Monterrey, Mexico, Owensboro Symphony, Topeka Symphony, Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Western-Piedmont Symphony Orchestra and JCC Symphony Orchestra. From 2008 to 2011, Averett was a solo cornet in the Fountain City Brass Band. While in the FCBB, he won two U.S. Open National Championship titles, three North American Brass Band Championship titles and was a part of the 2009 "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" album, which was deemed the best Brass Band album of 2009 by fourbarsrest.com. Averett was also a part of the band when they became the first North American Brass Band to ever win a major European Championship, the 2009 Scottish Open. He has performed with the Derby City Brass Band, The Old Crowne Brass Band, The Fort Wayne Bach Colleguim, The Hickory Choral Society, America’s Hometown Band and the Louisville Metro Big Band. As an adjudicator, Averett judged state solo and large ensemble events from Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, MTNA and at the National Trumpet Competition. He has been published by the Ball State University Press and by the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Averett holds degrees from Lenoir-Rhyne College and Ball State University.
