Saving dogs a truckload at a time

Lost in the Stacks Dog

In high-kill shelters all over the Deep South, in open-air animal impounds contaminated with parvovirus and distemper, in dumpsters and in the streets, abandoned and abused dogs await their fate. Some will die of disease, some will be euthanized, but a few lucky dogs will be rescued by heroic volunteers and sent on the road trip of their lives.

Rescue Road

Every other week Greg Mahle drives his tractor trailer filled with kennels from his home in Ohio to the Gulf Coast. Here he will pick up the fortunate puppies and dogs destined for a new life. His mission is to safely transport as many as 90 dogs over a thousand miles to their new forever families waiting eagerly in Connecticut.

In Rescue Road, journalist Peter Zheutlin joins Greg Mahle on one of his rescue trips. From the backbreaking labor of prepping the kennels in Ohio to the final ebullient “Gotcha Day”, Zheutlin chronicles the grueling journey, the endless paperwork, and the amazing volunteers who devote countless hours to make each rescue a success. A touching story of deserving dogs and devoted rescuers, Rescue Road is recommended for all animal lovers.
