Each One Teach One: Reading Tutor Kits are Now Available

"Each one teach one".  This proverb and maxim has been part of the philosophy of literacy advocates for decades.   It encourages those who have the gift of literacy to pass it on to someone else.

The Library recently added two Reading Tutor Kits to our Adult Learner collection.  These kits are meant to help those who have taken on the task of helping someone improve his or her literacy skills.  They contain books, worksheets, manipulatives, games, reading aids, and other items that tutors could use with their students.  We hope that this will give tutors a chance to try out some of the different resources available to them and learn some tips and techniques that will be helpful.   We hope to add additional tutor kits for ESL (English as a Second Language) and math within the next couple of years.

These kits will check out for 6 weeks and patrons will find them in the Adult Learner neighborhood (if they are checked in) or request them in the Library's catalog.

Here are the contents of the Reading Tutor Kit:

The library's website also offers access to Learning Express, which is a powerful tool that students can use at a computer. It offers free courses, video tutorials, and e-books for students in everything from preparing for the GED, reading, writing, math, to preparing for occupational tests for the military, health care field, teaching field, and so many more.

With all of these resources the library hopes that anyone who is tutoring or learning will find the help and support they need.
