Get your baseballs, pictures, and other memorabilia ready! Former Major League Baseball Players, and Topeka products, Mike Torrez and Ken Berry will be at Hy-Vee at 29th and Wanamaker tomorrow, Wednesday, November 16 from 4:00-7:00 signing autographs.
Torrez, a Topeka High graduate, won 185 career games in an eighteen year major league career from 1967-84, while also pitching 119 complete games and posting a career ERA of 3.96. He was recently recognized by the Topeka Capital Journal as the top athlete in Shawnee County History. While in the majors he pitched for several teams, including the Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles, Cardinals and Mets. In 1977 Torrez pitched two complete games in the World Series helping lead the Yankees to a series win over the Dodgers.
Berry, a graduate of Washburn Rural, was an outfielder known for his defensive prowess during his fourteen year major league career. From 1962-75, he spent time with the White Sox, Angels, Brewers, and Indians. A multi sport athlete in high school and college, he came in second to Torrez in the balloting for the Topeka Capital Journal’s top athlete in Shawnee County History
