A free and new way to learn languages online is now available to Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library cardholders. Mango for Libraries, a language learning web program, offers 40 different languages and 16 ESL courses.
Access it via www.tscpl.org. Click here and scroll through our database list and select Mango. Once there, you will need to create an account, but it’s easy. Then you can be on your way to learning a language for work, travel or just for fun! You’ll need a library card to access it outside the library.
“Requests over the years for an economical way to learn a new language have not gone unnoticed,” said Jeff Tate, Digital Librarian. “We are happy to finally offer Mango, through our partnership with the State Library of Kansas, and think customers will be happy to use it.”
Mango offers a convenient and easy way to learn languages, from Mandarin to Spanish, French to Hebrew – there’s even a course on how to talk like a Pirate.
Mango is available in two versions per language selected: one provides a deep understanding of a language and its culture, the other teaches everyday greetings, goodbyes and helpful phrases in a short period of time and is designed to appeal to a beginner.
Each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that integrates components of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and culture. Users learn actual conversation, breaking down complex linguistic elements.
Mango also has a great app for Apple and Android devices. To use the app, create a Mango profile online, then use that profile to activate the App. Get the Mango for Libraries app from iTunes or Google Play.
Your library card also gives you access to Muzzy, an online language learning software for younger children – even those who can’t yet read. Click “Research” for access to Muzzy and more online resources to aid your research and learning.
