DIY Digital Storytime: Music and Rhyme

You might have noticed the feature in the April-May Library News about how talking and singing with your child makes them smarter.  An added bonus?  It's FUN!  This week we're celebrating music and rhyme with a delightful, lighthearted storytime.

This Week’s Theme: Music and Rhyme

Before you read, ask your kids to think of some rhyming words.  I say cup, you say ______.  I say tickle, you say_______.   Ask your kids to listen for the rhyming words as you read the story.  You might also want to introduce kids to the word minnow if it's not a word they're already familiar with.  You can find In the Small, Small Pond in the Music and Rhyme section, or just click on the book cover above if you’ve already logged in.

Music and Rhyme

After you've finished reading In the Small, Small Pond, have your kids report back to you on the rhyming words they found.  Then, sing along with Hap Palmer in Down by the Bay.  Be sure to make up some of your own verses as well!

That song was very silly, wasn't it?  Let's read another silly poem.  (Click the book cover below, or look in the Music and Rhyme section of Bookflix.)

Let's wrap up our storytime with one of our favorite musicians and poets, Jim Gill.  Be sure to play along!  (P.S.  Be sure to check out the June-July Library News.  Jim Gill is joining us for a concert this summer!)

I hope this storytime inspired you to make music and poetry together!  Check out the resources below for more fun ideas.
