Your first opportunity to step inside is Wednesday, July 16 starting at 9am in the library’s parking lot. Join us for a ribbon cutting ceremony, meet bookmobile staff and mystery VIPs and take a tour of the fully stocked bookmobile. Come in and check it out and meet the folks who made it possible! The Sherlock Holmes-themed bookmobile will be parked here until 7pm that day, so stop by after work if you can’t make it in the morning.

Sherlock Holmes stands almost 8 feet tall. The wrap was designed by the library and Capitol Federal staff, and captured by award-winning KC photographer Alistair Tutton. The design is loosely based on a Conan Doyle short-story The Final Problem. We have set the story in Topeka, so you will see scenes photographed at the Kansas Museum of History, The Charles Curtis House & Museum and to rooftop of the Docking State Office Building. Costumed actors appearing on the bus are local talent the library worked with through Topeka Civic Theatre & Academy. The actors are Jeremy Barclay (Sherlock Holmes), Bill Gloy (Dr. Watson) and Marc Rapp (Professor Moriarty).

The Library Foundation’s work with Capitol Federal® Foundation has created a literacy partnership that will be enjoyed all over Shawnee County. The $200,000 gift enabled the library to purchase the new bookmobile to replace a 21-year-old vehicle. Friends of the library also supported the purchase of this vehicle.

The bookmobile will need to be stocked with all new books, DVDs, magazines and CDs, so come July 16 to be among the first to see this new library “branch” and the first to check on it. Look for a schedule of Bookmobile stops online or in Library News, delivered to cardholder mailboxes every other month. Or pick up a schedule at the event! Find Bookmobile staff in bright blue shirts.

Bookmobiles run 92 hours a week and serve about 100,000 customers a year. They are a much-loved service of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library.
