Spring is now in full swing and it is time to go outside and finally enjoy the beautiful weather. Running and walking are great ways to enjoy nature, while exercising at the same time. There are a few places around Topeka where you can enjoy the great outdoors. I personally like going out to Lake Shawnee, Shunga Trail or the Governor’s Mansion since they have great trails to bike, run or walk. If you are interested in a little day trip, try hiking the trails on Kanza Prairie near Manhattan, KS.
Running or walking offers more benefits than just exploring nature. It’s usually inexpensive since no equipment is necessary except for a pair of athletic shoes. It’s also a great stress reliever. When I’m running I think of nothing else. But most importantly it is good for your health and can help prevent certain diseases as we age or help maintain healthier blood sugar or blood pressure levels.
If you haven’t done any exercising in awhile be sure to start slowly and always remember to stretch to avoid injuries. As always, the library has some great books and DVD’s to help you start out. They can help you with everything from how long to run, what kind of shoes to wear, or why to run.
For the more competitive runners and walkers out there, numerous 5ks or 10ks are available to participate in and around Topeka. For a list of races that you can compete in, check out this website www.kcrunningcompany.com/calendar.php.
