Promote Arts & Culture
We celebrate and preserve our community’s cultural and artistic heritage. Donations through The Library Foundation help to support a variety of programs that enrich the lives of members of our community through art and music.
The music program, Music For A Sunday Afternoon, brings performers from grade school students to professionals to entertain with a variety of vocal and instrumental performances. Performances are free and open to the public.
The Alice C. Sabatini Gallery connects individuals to culture, art and artists – both modern and classic – through the photographer’s lens, the painter’s brush and the sculptor’s craft. The Library Foundation helps fund the gallery’s annual art exhibit for children.
Donors assist in expanding the permanent art collection in numerous ways, including personal gifts of artwork. The Sabatini Art Gallery charges no admission and is home to Topeka’s oldest public art collection of nearly 5,000 items. The gallery is renowned for two national art competitions and its annual art exhibit for children. Professional exhibits from the library’s permanent collections as well as traveling exhibits attract nearly 20,000 visitors annually.
The Library Foundation believes that the community should have access to an array of books, from bound books and e-books to large print and talking books. We need more books than the library can afford to buy.
Joining our Buy a Book Club replenishes our bookshelves and promotes self-directed learning in your community. Your membership makes a difference where it’s needed most. By believing in the value of a great public library, your gift allows the library to purchase new books to keep its offerings current, relevant and available to everyone. Being a member is something you’ll be proud of – providing more best sellers, more books for children and more eBooks to download. Your gift of at least $35 will put a book in the hand of a child. Provide Programs & Services
In 2012, The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library had 81,151 patrons attend programs offered at the library. The Library Foundation raises funds to help ensure that thousands of programs are available to children, teens, adults and senior citizens year round. Everyone in the community can benefit from the extensive list of library programs such as; computer training classes, Talking Books, Readapalooza, The Edge, Summerfest, Bookmobile Services, Community Center Programs , R.E.A.D Dogs, Tot Time, Baby Bookworms, Write-apalooza, Sing Dance and Read, and Guys Read.
The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library wants everyone in the community to read during the summer. Participation in Summerfest means great stories and amazing entertainment. Summer reading helps combat the learning loss that naturally occurs when students go on summer vacation. Reading practice during summer ensures that children head back to school maintaining or improving reading skills, according to our multi-year study of summer reading’s effectiveness on test scores.
The transformation to the Kids Library has made it a true destination for children and families.
We help bridge the digital divide. Everyone has computer access at the library. The “digital divide,” which separates those with home computer access from those without it, will never hold back members of our community who come to the library. Many library patrons rely on the library for access to computers for employment tools, government and social services, language programs and test preparation. In addition, the library has created a digital branch library, which permits users to access library services at any time, from virtually any location. The library’s Digital Branch had 474,065 unique visitors in 2012.
The TSCPL is embracing technology to successfully meet the needs and desires of the Topeka community. From help figuring out your e-reader, downloading digital content and providing a range of free computer classes the TSCPL has it all.
