Happy Birthday, Shel Silverstein!

Although he died 15 years ago of a heart attack, Shel Silverstein's books are still enjoyed by children and adults today.

Known for his willingness to try unusual ideas without concern for social conventions, Silverstein authored 20 books, which are now available in more than 30 different languages. With a quirky sense of humor some considered inappropriate, his poetry collection A Light in the Attic was one of the 100 most frequently challenged books in the 1990s.

Silverstein's first children's book, Lafcadio, was published in 1963. The humorous tale of a lion who tricks a hunter into taking him home without shooting him first, Lafcadio is an illustrated chapter book with an ending that will make you think.

While many remember Silverstein for his poetry, he also wrote storybooks, fables, plays, and humor books for adults.  Many of his poems and drawings now well-loved by children were originally published in Playboy magazine.  A singer and songwriter, one of his most well-known songs is "A Boy Named Sue," made famous by Johnny Cash.  You can use your library card to download Silverstein's music on Freegal and Hoopla.

I say you haven't really heard Shel Silverstein until you've heard him in his own voice.  Check out the audio collection Where the Sidewalk Ends and treat both your ears and your soul.
